Networking is an important part of career success and this applies to the real estate industry as well.
From growing your online influence to generating leads and enhancing opportunities for referrals, when done correctly, networking can have great impact on your business.
Real estate industry events are one way to network, but don’t limit yourself to these alone.
Since real estate is a people business, networking can pretty much be done anywhere people are.
The next time you have the opportunity to do some networking, consider the following:
1. Plan Ahead –
Know who you are talking to.
If you are attending an event, have a game plan before you arrive. Set goals for the networking opportunity.
These will vary depending on your unique circumstances, but it might include something like:
– Try to speak to at least 5 people
– Get 10 business cards
– Research the other attendees so when you meet them, you’ll know something about them.

2. It’s Not About You –
We’ve all been there. Stuck at a networking event with a person who only wants to talk about himself.
Don’t be that guy (or gal). Ask questions. Show that you are interested in what others have to say.
Be genuine and authentic and employ active listening.
You will make a much better impression if you make other people feel heard than if you try to do all the talking.
3. Look for an Opportunity to Help –
This is where talking about yourself comes in.
As you are listening to what others have to say, look for opportunities to help.
Maybe they will mention that their child just went off to college and they need a smaller house.
Maybe they will say their family is growing and their current house isn’t big enough.
Maybe they are looking for a trustworthy service professional to help with some home repairs.
This is your chance to offer some valuable advice or insight that will help cement the connection.
The other person will come away from the interaction feeling like they got something out of it and you will have generated a new lead using a proven method.
4. Follow Up –
This is probably the most important aspect of networking.
After you have made connections with different people, take the time to follow up. Reach out and remind them that you met.
The follow-up is your chance to share more information about yourself and your business.
Ask them if you may add them to your email newsletter list or share a link to your social media channels.
Don’t let a possible networking opportunity fall flat because you didn’t take the time to follow up.
