One of the hardest parts of being a real estate agent is trying to keep a healthy balance between work and family life. It seems that as real estate professionals, we’re often at the beck and call of clients, buyers, and sellers. We show listings at all hours to make the sale and it seems we could stay on our phones day and night.
As busy real estate professionals, we have to make time for our families. We have to think outside the box sometimes to make things happen in our work life, so why shouldn’t we be able to do the same with our families? There are a few simple things we can do every day to make sure we’re not losing touch with the ones we love.
The Phone- Make sure your family knows they can call you at any time. Your team should know they are to always put them straight through to you no matter what. If you’re with a client, politely excuse yourself and take the call. Most people will understand. At home, turn it off when dinner starts and don’t take business calls during a meal or important conversation with your loved ones. Whatever the situation, it can wait.
Dinner- Having dinner as a family is getting harder and harder these days. The kids have friends, sports, and school work. But just because it’s harder, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Try to schedule at least one dinner together as a family per week. Use that time to catch up with one another and address challenges as a family. Think of it as a council meeting.
One On One Time- You have to make time for one on one interaction with your family. Maybe take your spouse or teenager to see that movie they’ve been talking about, or just take a walk together or go out for an ice cream. Maintain those relationships by focusing on them individually on a regular basis. This includes taking time for yourself. You might feel pulled in all directions, but it’s important for you to recharge and rejuvenate yourself so you can be your best self for your clients.
